Gartner magic quadrant for digital experience platforms 2021

Dani Goodwin - Marketing Manager,

As an Episerver Platinum Partner, we’re delighted that Episerver (now known as Optimizely following a recent rebrand) has been named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Experience Platforms 2021 for the fourth year running.

In this blog, we outline what Gartner Magic Quadrant for DXPs is all about, we take a look at where Episerver (Optimizely) is positioned this year and chat to some of our agency experts to get their take on this year’s report.

What exactly is the Gartner Magic Quadrant (for Digital Experience Platforms)?

For those who are not familiar, the Gartner Magic Quadrant gives an objective and wide-angled view of the positioning of big technology players within a specific market, and is designed to support organisations in the technology selection process.

Using a set of uniform criteria, Gartner’s researchers evaluate where key players’ sit on two scales 1) ‘Completeness of vision’ and 2) ‘Ability to execute’ in order to categorise players into 1 of 4 positionings – Challenges, Leaders, Visionaries and Niche Players. You can find out more about the Quadrant methodology here.

Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Digital Experience Platforms (DXPs) is designed to give technology decision makers at global organisations support in identifying partners (or what the report refers to as ‘vendors’) to help them in delivering their digital roadmap or support them on their digital transformation journey.

The report includes an overview of DXP market trends (including analysis around the market’s direction, maturity, and participants), alongside the strengths and cautions of 16 key DXP players.

So, how does Episerver (Optimizely) fair?

Episerver (Optimizely)’s customer-centric DXP (featuring Content Cloud, Intelligence Cloud and Commerce Cloud) has been recognised as a ‘Leader’ based on the platform’s ability to execute and completeness of vision.

With a vision to empower organisations to unlock digital potential, the platform's Chief Product Officer, Justin Anovick, puts this year’s success down to the platform’s ability “to provide visionary products that deliver true business value… to help [organisations] deliver powerful digital experiences”.

What do we think?

This week, we asked our Solutions Director, John Prior, to get his opinion on this year's report. Here's what he had to say:

“Year after year, Gartner has recognised Episerver’s continued advancement as a leader in the DXP space, and it’s great to see them acknowledged as the foremost .Net based platform in the 2021 quadrant. Episerver doesn’t just have terrific features that lead the market in key areas of innovation such as machine learning and experimentation, it makes it easy to manage and deploy new capabilities without forcing customers to prematurely invest time or money in features until they’re ready to use them. That, alongside its continued commitment to innovation, helps Episerver to stand out as a solution that’s not only great value for money but that will grow alongside your company, so you’re not forced to choose between a platform that’s right for you today versus a platform that will be right for you tomorrow.”
